LIENZO VIVO · PAINTING THAT ANSWERS BACK

The valley of echoes

A painting in oil pastel and acrylic that moves, sounds and answers whoever touches it: in a web browser, on a touch screen and inside a virtual reality headset.

A painted valley of green and pink hills, red roofs, sheep, a stone bridge and a blue river.

The work

The valley of echoes is a painting and a place to visit. Elisa Leono painted the canvas and wrote its story, «The resonance». Together, Lienzo Vivo turned it into a living painting that runs in any web browser and in a virtual reality headset.

Nothing comes from outside the canvas. What moves, what sounds and what visitors paint all start from its own brushstrokes: the river runs, birds cross the sky and a bicycle rides down to the bridge; the bridge plays like a piano and answers with an echo; the houses remember your melody and sing it back to you; and anyone can paint stones, reeds, tomatoes or sheep made from the valley's own pigment.

The bridge. Its stones play like a piano; each note comes back as an echo from the other side of the valley.
Detail of the painting: the tree and the houses on the pink hill
The houses. Every roof has its own note; when you fall silent, they sing your melody back to you.

The river. Touch it and your ripples travel through its brushstrokes.

How it was made

The canvas was photographed in high resolution. Its smallest figures, such as the sheep, were lifted out and the paint behind them was restored, so that they could move and come back to their place.

Then every roof, tree, fence, field and stone of the bridge was traced along its painted outline. That map tells the work which part of the painting a finger is touching, so that each one can answer in its own way.

Use of AI

The paintings, the texts and the ideas behind what happens inside the paintings are ours. We use AI in the programming layer, so that what is painted moves and what we want to say comes across. It does not generate a single drawing or a single sentence of the work.

The story behind the work

Elisa Leono was born in Málaga and lives in a small village in Navarra, in the north of Spain, so the sea and the mountains both live in her. When she walks through the hills around her home, she often feels that the landscape has a voice of its own. She fills notebooks with what she sees and what she dreams, and then she paints.

The valley of echoes was born together with a story. In «The resonance», Elisa's story of this valley, a newcomer arrives in an unknown valley one August and, little by little, learns to listen: to the river that cools their bare feet, to the sheep that never tire of singing, to the broken roof tiles that argue about whether a piece of the moon fell on them, to some jealous houses and to the great spirit of a tree. The newcomer keeps those secrets not in words but in musical notes, until the melody bewitches the whole valley. The painting holds that place: its hills, its roofs, its stone bridge and its river.

Lienzo Vivo was born from an ordinary conversation between three friends: Elisa, the urban artist Vima and Alberto. We wanted the painting to tell what it holds inside. Alberto had the idea of stepping into the painting, and Vima brought ideas to that immersion. One rule guided everything: nothing would be added from outside the canvas. We photographed it, lifted out its smallest figures and traced every roof, field and fence along its painted outline, so that each one could answer. The story did the rest: the bridge became a piano, every note returns as an echo, and when you fall silent the houses sing your melody back to you.

We made it ourselves, without funding, in 2026. The valley is imaginary, but the way of listening it asks for is real: a place becomes a home when you begin to hear it.

I stopped having a house so I could discover a home; I stopped hearing and began to listen.

That is why what is new is not the medium: it is that the work answers back.

Programming Lienzo Vivo is not hanging a screen with an animation: it is giving the visitor a voice.

The artists

Lienzo Vivo is a project that began in 2026. It is made up of a team of three people who create the basic pillars of the initiative:

Elisa Leono creates a work and its story, into which she pours all her experiences. As an artist she lays the primitive base of the process. An explorer of the imaginary, her role is to reproduce the artistic idea in a conventional, physical way so as to convey it in a painting, getting her hands stained with colour from oil pastels and acrylics.

Alberto Díaz captures all those concepts and begins to build the invisible threads of the composition with his more than twenty years of experience creating technology projects. As a software engineer he presses the keys needed to make the development of the process tangible; as a weaver of worlds he makes the painting no longer just send out a message and wait, but become a living canvas that answers.

Víctor Martínez, the person who seems to be in nothing and is in everything. He has spent a whole life transforming his surroundings with his artistic skills. He is the craftsman of the soul who supports every phase of the process, helps with every new need that comes up and does not rest until every detail is polished, drawing fully on his wide experience as a themed designer.

Víctor Martínez signs his urban art as Vima. He has painted large-scale murals for town councils and organisations such as the Spanish Red Cross and school parents' associations, and his walls can be found across the Ribera of Navarra: Tudela, Cascante, Ablitas, Fitero, Monteagudo and Cintruénigo, among other towns.
